The first misconception
What we hear most: "I'm too young for that." Vaginal dryness relates to oestrogen levels and mucosal condition, not your date of birth. We see it daily in women in their twenties and thirties.
The unfortunate consequence of this belief is that many endure discomfort for years, avoiding the subject even with their doctor.
The seven causes
- Breastfeeding: the leading cause in younger women. Oestrogen naturally falls during lactation and returns after weaning — but the discomfort meanwhile is real and treatable.
- Hormonal contraception: some formulations reduce natural lubrication. Changing the type can resolve it entirely.
- Harsh washes: perfumed or highly alkaline products disrupt the area's acidic balance and kill beneficial bacteria.
- Medications: antihistamines, some antidepressants, and acne treatments.
- Chemotherapy and hormonal therapy: particularly in breast cancer treatment.
- Chronic stress and poor sleep: the hormonal impact is real and usually overlooked.
- Perimenopause: which begins for some women in their mid-thirties.
When treatment becomes necessary
- Pain or burning during intimacy.
- Persistent itching or irritation not responding to ordinary moisturisers.
- Recurrent urinary or vaginal infections.
- Discomfort when sitting or in certain clothing.
- A clear effect on your daily quality of life.
Non-hormonal treatment options
Golden plasma (PRP): prepared from your own blood and injected into the vaginal wall to stimulate microvessels and glands. Safe while breastfeeding and suited to anyone who cannot use hormones, lasting twelve to eighteen months.
Dedicated hyaluronic acid: direct hydration that works quickly and lasts six to nine months.
Collagen stimulation: improves the quality of the mucosa itself over the longer term.
Home steps that genuinely help
- Replace perfumed washes with lukewarm water or a pH-balanced wash.
- A dedicated vaginal moisturiser (not body cream) two to three times weekly.
- Drink enough water — general dehydration shows here too.
- Cotton underwear, and avoid sleeping in tight clothing.
- Review your medication list with your doctor if dryness began after a new prescription.
